‘India is proud to be home to the Asiatic lions,’ says PM Modi

On the occasion of “World Lion Day”, The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the dedication of all those working towards protecting the habitat of lions.

Highlighting the occasion, PM Modi tweeted that World Lion Day is an occasion to celebrate the majestic lions that captivate our hearts with their strength and magnificence. India is proud to be home to the Asiatic Lions and over the last few years there has been a steady rise in the lion population in India. I laud all those working towards protecting the habitat of lions. May we continue to cherish and protect them, ensuring they thrive for generations to come.

PM Modi launched the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) for conservation of seven big cats namely Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar and Puma harbouring our planet on April 9th. The alliance was based on the success story of India’s Project Tiger which resulted in India becoming home to 70% of the world’s Tiger population. The alliance aims to reach out to 97 range countries covering the natural habitats

World Lion Day is observed on August 10 every year globally to raise awareness about their conservation and protection. Main aim is to to educate people about the challenges faced by the lions across the world and to promote efforts to conserve them. This day tells the significance fo lions in ecosystems and cultures around the world. In 2013, World Lion Day was celebrated first time to raise awareness about the conservation of lions.

In India’s Gujarat state, more than 600 lions reside in Gir forest area. India’s lions are categorized under Asiatic lion. India is proud to be home to the Asiatic lions and has seen a steady rise in their numbers over the last few years. Besides India, African continent has a good number of this big cat.
