PM Modi’s visit to Greece elevates ‘Strategic Partnership’ between the countries

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Greece on August 25, engaging in fruitful discussions with Greek counterparts and strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. The visit marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Greece in 40 years and resulted in an elevating their relationship to ‘Strategic Partnership,’ underscoring the shared commitment to collaboration across diverse domains.

The two leaders held discussions in one-on-one and delegation-level formats. In the discussions, both leaders covered a wide spectrum of bilateral dimensions, ranging from trade and investment to defence and security, technology, infrastructure, digital payments, shipping, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, migration, and tourism. They also discussed regional and multilateral issues, including the EU, Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean.

One of the most significant outcomes of the diplomatic engagements was the decision to elevate the bilateral relationship to a ‘Strategic Partnership.’ This milestone reflects the intent to foster a closer alliance between the two countries and is a significant development in strengthening India-EU relations.

The bilateral discussions also underscored the importance of people-to-people ties, highlighting the potential for cultural exchange, education collaboration, and skill development.

Earlier that day, PM Modi was conferred with ‘The Grand Cross of the Order of Honour’ by President of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou. The two leaders recalled the shared values of democracy, freedom, and rule of law. They also discussed matters related to sustainable development and women-led development, among others.

PM Modi also attended the business lunch hosted by PM of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis and witnessed participation from leading Indian and Greek CEOs from diverse sectors, including shipping, infrastructure, and energy, among others.

Alongside their historical civilisational links, Greece is one of India’s most significant European partners and instrumental to India’s growing trade with Europe. As mentioned by Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, “Greece is one of India’s important European partners, is a member of the EU, of NATO, is a gateway to Europe and also to the EU market, and enjoys a privileged position at the crossroads of Asia, Europe, and Africa.”
