In a historic moment under India’s G20 Presidency, the African Union becomes a permanent member of the G20 grouping. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement and welcomed the President of the African Union and the Comoros, Azali Assoumani, to join other G20 leaders.

The Ministry of External Affairs, describing the announcement, said “For a G20 which is more inclusive and more vocal for the Global South”. Notably, under India’s G20 Presidency, participation from Africa is the highest ever.

The Voice of the Global South Summit, which managed to bring together 125 countries of the Global South, was an important event aimed at involving countries that are not part of the G20 but their concerns and aspirations needed to be addressed.
