An avalanche struck Sumeru mountain behind the Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district on Sunday.
The arrival of devotees in the Char Dham Yatra, which has been going on intermittently for the last two weeks, had resumed, but the news of an avalanche on Sunday morning led to panic among the pilgrims again.
Fortunately, there was no damage due to the avalanche being at a considerable distance.
This avalanche has not caused any damage nor has the water level of Saraswati river increased”, Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar said in a report.
“The situation in Kedarnath is normal”, DGP Kumar added.
An avalanche is characterized by the rapid descent of a mass of snow or ice down a mountainside.
For the fourth time this year, there has been an incident of breaking of glacier in this region. In fact, such incidents are not uncommon in the high Himalayan region.
