India & Japan unite for cybersecurity collaboration

The fifth India-Japan Cyber Dialogue, held in Tokyo on September 14, 2023, focused on bolstering cybersecurity cooperation between the two countries. The Indian delegation was led by Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary, Cyber Diplomacy Division, while the Japanese delegation was spearheaded by Ishizuki Hideo, Ambassador in Charge of Cyber Policy.

The Ministry of External Affairs informed that both sides reviewed the progress achieved in the areas of cybersecurity and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), including 5G technology.

As a major outcome, discussions were held pertaining to the latest developments in the cyber domain and mutual cooperation at the United Nations and other multilateral and regional forums like the Quad Framework.

Another crucial theme of the discussions was the importance of capacity building. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to work together in this area to enhance their cyber security.

Looking ahead, India invited Japan to participate in the sixth India-Japan Cyber Dialogue, scheduled for 2024 in New Delhi at a mutually convenient time. The invitation reflects the willingness of both countries to maintain the ongoing discussions, address cybersecurity challenges, and harness the potential of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for mutual benefit.

Last year, India held various cyber dialogues with various countries, including Japan, Germany, Australia, and the USA, among others. In addition, in the last few years, India has raised its voice in tackling threats posed by cybercrimes and cyberterrorism on various international platforms. The country has also promoted cyber security by setting up Centres of Excellence and Institutes of Technology in various countries.
