“India’s recent phenomenal economic rise and global ascendancy imperatively call for a modern Navy to protect its maritime interests,” said Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar at the launch of the warship ‘Mahendragiri’ in Mumbai today (September 1). ‘Mahendragiri’ is the seventh stealth frigate under Project 17A of the Indian Navy and the fourth constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).

Mahendragiri, named after a mountain peak in the Eastern Ghats located in the state of Orissa, encompasses improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors, and platform management systems. Project 17A ships have been designed in-house by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, the pioneer organisation for all warship design activities.

Notably, around 75% of the equipment and systems of Project 17A ships have been sourced from indigenous firms, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Speaking on the occasion, the Vice President pointed out that India has emerged as a net security provider in the Indo-Pacific region. He further stressed that the launch of Mahendragiri, the 7th Nilgiri-class stealth frigate, is a testament to the unwavering commitment and indomitable spirit of the Indian Navy.

Over the years, the Indian Navy has significantly expanded its fleet, incorporating advanced warships, submarines, and naval aircraft. “The security in the Indian Ocean Region, and the larger Indo-Pacific has diverse challenging aspects. The Indian navy is ably discharging the mandate to protect, preserve and promote India’s maritime interests,” said the Vice President.

The Indian Navy plays a pivotal role in ensuring maritime security and protecting vital sea lanes of communication. With India’s growing economy and energy needs, securing maritime trade routes has assumed paramount importance.
