India-Canada tensions | PM Justine Trudeau | Indian High Commission | Indian nationals in Canada

India urges Indian nationals in Canada to exercise caution amid rising tensions

Indian nationals in Canada are advised to avoid travelling to the regions that are potential of anti-India activities. “In view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada, all Indian nationals there and those contemplating travel are urged to exercise utmost caution,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in an official advisory released on September 20.

This advisory comes in the wake of the recent worsening India-Canada relations after Canadian PM Justine Trudeau accused the Indian government of its involvement in killing of Khalistani terrorists Hardeep Singh Nijjar. While the diplomatic spat continues between both countries, India has been coming up with strong decisions one after the other.

The advisory also mentioned that in light of recent threats, which have specifically targeted Indian diplomats and segments of the Indian community opposed to the anti-India agenda, Indian citizens are advised to avoid traveling to areas and potential locations in Canada where these incidents have occurred.

The Ministry also assured that the Indian High Commission/Consulates General will continue to be in contact with the Canadian authorities to ensure the safety and well being of the Indian community in Canada. The advisory added, “Given the deteriorating security environment in Canada, Indian students in particular are advised to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant.”

The Ministry of External Affairs also urged the Indian nationals and students from India in Canada to register with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or the Consulates General of India in Toronto and Vancouver through their respective websites or the MADAD portal madad.gov.in. This registration will facilitate the High Commission and the Consulates General in establishing better communication with Indian citizens in Canada in the event of emergencies or unforeseen incidents.
