International Government Communication Forum in Sharjah spotlights media’s role in sustainability issues

The International Government Communication Forum (IGCF) in Sharjah is set to kick off with a spotlight on the vital role, media plays in addressing and raising awareness about sustainability-related topics. As part of the event, a Media Seminar brought together prominent media figures, featuring insightful panel discussions on “Media Coverage and Climate Change” and “The Role of Media in Highlighting Sustainability Issues.”

Prominent Media Figures Emphasize Specialized Coverage

The Media Seminar saw the participation of media luminaries, including Venkatesh Ramakrishnan, Managing Editor of The Aidem, and Moshoeshoe Nkgakga Monare, representing SABC TV News and Current Affairs at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Ramakrishnan underscored the importance of specialized media outlets dedicated to sustainability issues, providing in-depth analysis to foster better public understanding.

Experts highlighted the need for comprehensive media coverage across various domains, such as the community, economy, health, and more, recognizing the complexity of sustainability topics.

Fernando Justus Fischer, Chief Operations Officer (COO) of SBT, delivered a keynote speech titled “Media Coverage of Climate Change: Global Models,” discussing effective media tools and global models for climate change coverage.

Another panel discussion, “Coverage of the Environment in the Media: A Historical Overview,” explored historical narratives in environment-related media coverage, featuring Isatou Davies Ann, Director General of Gambia News Agency (GAMNA), and Steven Skillet, Scientific Consultant at Trends Research & Advisory.

Addressing the seminar’s inaugural session, Mohammed Jalal Al Rayssi, Director-General of Emirates News Agency, emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships between media organizations, especially local offices, enhancing news quality locally, regionally, and internationally.

The IGCF in Sharjah provides a platform for experts and leaders to discuss government communication best practices, focusing this year on resource scarcity and sustainable development. The Media Seminar and keynote speech underscore the critical role of media in addressing sustainability challenges and raising awareness. The 12th edition of the International Government Communication Forum, being held at the Sharjah Expo Centre from 13th to 14th September, 2023 under the theme ‘Today’s Resources.. Tomorrow’s Wealth’.
