US Open | Novak Djokovic | US Open 2023 | 24 Grand Slams | Coco Gauff | Rafael Nadal

Novak Djokovic wins Grand Slam No 24; Equals Margaret Court

Novak Djokovic scripted history as he won his 24th Grand Slam after winning the US Open Championship yet again. The World No 2 defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets ( 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3) in the final of the Men’s Singles.

With this win, Novak surpassed Serena Williams’ 23 and equalled Margaret Court’s all-time record. If he wins the Australian Open 2024, he will not only write new history pages but also surpass all, and become the Greatest Player of All Times. In terms of Slams, Novak has left Rafael Nadal (22) and Roger Federer (20), far behind.

Novak entered the US Open having won the Australian Open, French Open and was a finalist at Wimbledon. The 36-year-old is the oldest Open-era men’s singles champion at the US Open, the same distinction he earned at Roland Garros in June.

Djokovic has no plan of stopping anytime soon. He said that he is looking for more. “Eventually one day I will leave tennis in about 23, 24 years…and there is going to be new young players coming up. Until then, I guess you’ll see me a bit more,” he said post the win.

Novak will also return to the top of the world rankings when they are updated on Monday.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s Singles final, 19-year-old Coco Gauff, became the first teenager since Serena Williams in 1999 to win the US open title. The American came from behind one set down to defeat Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in 2hr 6min to lift the title.
