In a momentous transition of leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the G20 Presidency to Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the G20 Summit on Sunday (September 10).

PM Modi warmly congratulated President Silva and symbolically passed on the G20 Presidency’s ceremonial gavel. “I want to congratulate Brazil’s president and my friend Lula da Silva and hand over the presidency’s gavel to him,” said PM Modi.

President Silva commended Prime Minister Modi for his effective leadership during India’s G20 Presidency and applauded the meticulous preparations for the summit. President Silva said, “I would like to congratulate Prime Minister Modi for efficiently leading the Indian G20 Presidency and for the excellent work done in preparing this summit.

President Silva also announced the areas on which the Brazilian Presidency of the G20 will be focusing, including social inclusion, the fight against hunger, and energy transition, among others. Further, the motto of Brazil’s Presidency will be ‘Building a fair world and a sustainable planet’. Brazil will officially take over the mantle of the presidency on December 1, 2023.

India assumed the Presidency of G20 on December 1, 2022. The Presidency of India has, in many ways, been a historic occasion in itself. Another major factor of India’s Presidency is that, for the first time, the ‘Troika’ comprised only developing countries.

The Troika is the format in which the G20 Presidency works, it comprises the country that is currently holding the Presidency, the country that held the Presidency earlier, and the country that will be the upcoming Presidency holder. This time, India (the current president), Indonesia (the previous president), and Brazil (the upcoming President) are part of the troika.

As India’s G20 Presidency draws to a close, it has set a remarkable precedent, reinforcing the importance of equitable representation and collaboration among nations on the world stage.
