Santiniketan, often referred to as the “Abode of Peace,” in a momentous occasion has joined the prestigious list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On September 17, UNESCO announced the decision on social media platform X.

Founded by Nobel Laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore in 1901, Santinketan, is located in West Bengal’s Birbhum district. It stands as a unique blend of educational institution, artistic hub, and natural haven. The serene campus of Visva Bharati University, the brainchild of Tagore, remains at the heart of this historic town.

With this development, Santinekatn becomes India’s 41st World Heritage Site to join the UNESCO list. The decision was made at the 45th World Heritage Committee Meeting held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing his joy, said, “Delighted that Santiniketan, an embodiment of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s vision and India’s rich cultural heritage, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This is a proud moment for all Indians.”

The recognition by UNESCO acknowledges Santiniketan’s role in shaping modern India’s cultural and educational landscape. Further, it is pertinent to note that since 2014, India has added more than 11 new World Heritage sites.

On this occasion, the Union Minister for Culture, G. Kishan Reddy, in a post on social media platform X, said, “Santiniketan in West Bengal has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This is India’s 41st World Heritage Site, and India stands 6th on the World Heritage List.”

The UNESCO recognition is expected to boost tourism in the region, allowing more people to experience the beauty and serenity of Santiniketan. This recognition serves as a reminder of the town’s enduring spirit—a place where wisdom, art, and nature come together in perfect harmony.
