Volleyball: Men-in-blue reach quarterfinals at Asian Games, defeat Chinese Taipei

After a thrilling win over South Korea, the men in blue took on Chinese Taipei on September 22. The Indian team beat their counterparts in three straight sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-21). With the win, India moves to the quarterfinals and will be facing Japan next.

India was facing another top 50 side in Chinese Taipei. Ranked at No. 43 in the world, Chinese Taipei is the seventh-best in Asia, much higher than India’s world ranking of 73.

In the first set, the Indian team was trailing behind, however, it tried to close the gap. India levelled the first set 21-21 and covered a gap of four points from 17-21. From there on, a serve point from Appavu got India an advantage of 22-21. Erin Varghese and Ashwal Rai combined to win India the final two points of the set. Both made successful blocks which helped India take the first set 25-22.

India took the lead in the second set. At 21-19, Ashwal Rai and Shameem got India the last two points. However, a service error from Amit got Chinese Taipei within one point. India closed the set with two consecutive points.

Inching towards a win, India was in lead in the third set too. When India was two points away from the win, Chinese Taipei won a point through Chen but a serve error on the next point handed the advantage back to India. India won the third set 25-21 to advance to the next round.
