Cyclone Hamoon: Maritime ports asked to lower cautionary signal

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised by Bangladesh Met office to lower the cautionary signal raised due to Cyclone Hamoon.

Cyclonic storm Hamoon killed at least three people and injured many in Bangladesh’s Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar coast as it moved onto land with deadly wind on Tuesday.

The storm, which weakened into a deep depression around 1:00 am on Wednesday, damaged at many mud houses in Cox’s Bazar.

Cox’s Bazar Sadar, Maheshkhali, Kutubdia, Chakaria and Pekhua sub-districts remained without power and internet as authorities struggled to clear broken trees and poles tangled with electric wire at many spots due to strom.

There was, however, no report of significant damage in the Rohingya refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar, housing about a million people in dilapidated housings.

Squally weather is unlikely over the maritime ports, north Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh, said a latest bulletin of the Met office.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and adjoining area have been advised to proceed with caution till this evening.

The cyclonic storm ‘Hamoon’, over northeast Bay and adjoining area, moved northeastward and crossed the coast at 1 am today, weakening into a land deep depression near Chattogram, said a latest bulletin of the Met office.
