Government increases subsidy for Ujjwala Scheme, beneficiaries to now pay ₹603 for per 14.2 kg cylinder

In a significant development, Union Minister Anurag Thakur has announced a boost in the subsidy provided to economically disadvantaged women who have availed of cooking gas connections through the Ujjwala scheme. Effective immediately, beneficiaries will see a reduction in the cost of 14.2 kg cylinders, now priced at Rs 603, down from the previous rate of Rs 703.

This announcement was formally made during a recent Union Cabinet briefing, wherein the government decided to augment the subsidy for women who acquired LPG connections under the Ujjwala scheme. The subsidy has been amplified from the erstwhile Rs 200 per cylinder to a more substantial Rs 300 per cylinder.

As it stood, Ujjwala beneficiaries were incurring expenses of Rs 703 per 14.2-kg cylinder, a cost that was considerably lower than the market price of Rs 903. However, following the government’s proactive measure, these beneficiaries will now enjoy a more affordable rate, paying just Rs 603 per cylinder.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur highlighted the significance of these policy adjustments, stating, “On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, reduction of Rs 200 (on LPG prices) was announced, which led to LPG rates coming down to Rs 900 from Rs 1100. Today, a new announcement is being made in which the beneficiaries of Ujjwala Yojana will now get Rs 300 subsidy instead of Rs 200.”
