India and Zambia strengthen bilateral defense ties in New Delhi meeting

India and Zambia came together for a crucial meeting in New Delhi on October 20, 2023. The gathering, which featured the presence of Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Permanent Secretary of Zambia’s Ministry of Defence, Norman Chipakupaku, focused on deepening bilateral defense ties and exploring avenues for enhanced cooperation.

The foundation for this collaborative effort was laid in 2019 when India and Zambia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defense Cooperation, providing a comprehensive framework for collaboration in various areas of defense.

One of the key areas of emphasis during the meeting was India’s commitment to supporting Zambia in military training and capacity-building endeavors. The Defence Secretary, Giridhar Aramane, conveyed the Indian side’s willingness to assist Zambia in strengthening its defense forces through military courses and the deployment of Indian training teams.

Aramane also highlighted the impressive capabilities of India’s defense industries, spanning a wide spectrum of operations, which have been developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This initiative has played a pivotal role in enhancing the self-reliance of India’s defense manufacturing sector.

Zambia’s Permanent Secretary expressed his appreciation for India’s advancements in defense industries and conveyed his eagerness to receive support from India in the form of high-quality and cost-effective equipment to modernize Zambia’s defense forces. Both nations recognized the potential for cooperation in the manufacturing of small arms, ammunition, and other defense equipment within Zambia.

During their stay in India, a 15-member delegation led by Zambia’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence has engaged in a comprehensive visit from October 15 to October 22, 2023. The delegation has had the opportunity to tour various establishments within the Indian Armed Forces and visit manufacturing facilities of Indian defense industries, encompassing both public and private sectors.

The meeting held in New Delhi serves as a testament to the growing partnership between India and Zambia in the realm of defense. As both nations explore collaborative opportunities, the stage is set for future advancements in defense capabilities and the strengthening of bilateral ties. This collaborative effort carries the potential to make a significant impact on the modernization and security enhancement of Zambia’s defense forces.
