In a notable stride towards achieving energy self-sufficiency, Indian Oil’s Paradip and Panipat Refineries have successfully launched “Reference Gasoline and Diesel Fuels.” This landmark achievement was celebrated in the presence of Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing & Urban Affairs, underlining India’s technological prowess and commitment to the vision of an AtmaNirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
Reference oils” or “reference fuels” are specialized, high-precision oils or fuels that are used as standard calibration materials for testing and certification in the automotive industry. These reference oils serve as benchmarks against which other oils or fuels can be compared for various performance, quality, and emissions-related tests.
Reference oils are used to ensure the accuracy and consistency of laboratory tests and engine performance evaluations. They are typically formulated to meet specific standards and properties, making them suitable for precise testing and measurement. Reference oils are essential in various research, development, and testing procedures, helping to evaluate the effectiveness of lubricants, fuels, and other automotive products.
What sets these Reference Fuels apart is their adherence to stringent specifications that go beyond commercial gasoline and diesel. India has historically relied on imports to meet the demand for these specialized fuels. However, with the indigenously developed Reference Fuels, India can now look forward to import substitution, reduced costs, and quicker availability for vehicle manufacturers.
This development signifies a major step in India’s journey to become an ‘energy-independent’ nation. The launch of Reference Fuels is a testament to the brilliance and relentless hard work of IndianOil, and it holds great potential for reducing India’s dependence on fuel imports.
The Minister highlighted the significance of this achievement as India’s first foray into the production of Reference Gasoline and Diesel Fuels. This home-grown development aligns with international benchmarks and showcases IndianOil’s commitment to excellence. Moreover, this achievement not only reduces India’s reliance on imported fuels but also positions the nation’s energy industry as a formidable player with exclusive competencies on the global stage.
The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make India an ‘energy-independent’ nation by 2047, has adopted a four-pronged energy security strategy:
-Diversification of Energy Supplies: To ensure a robust and varied energy supply.
-Increasing India’s Exploration and Production Footprint: To reduce dependence on foreign sources.
-Transition to Alternate Energy Sources: Embracing a gas-based economy.
-Green Hydrogen and Electric Vehicles (EVs): Pioneering sustainable energy alternatives.
Indian Oil’s contribution to this strategy is vital, with Panipat Refinery & Petrochemicals Complex leading the way by commissioning India’s first 2G & 3G ethanol plants. An upcoming 10 KTA green hydrogen plant at Panipat further underscores IndianOil’s commitment to green energy transition, making it a crucial part of India’s sustainable energy future.
The Paradip Refinery, recognized as one of India’s most modern and complex refineries, can process 100% high sulfur crude oil. Recently, it achieved a significant milestone by handling its 1000th vessel at the south oil jetty.
IndianOil’s Research & Development Centre played an essential role in this achievement, having filed over 1500 patents and gaining recognition for decades of pioneering work.
In addition to this, India is actively pursuing a cleaner energy agenda, with efforts to expedite fuel blending, move the target for achieving 20% blending from 2030 to 2025, and the sale of E20 blended fuel at over 5,000 petrol retail outlets. The introduction of green hydrogen fuel cell buses in Delhi is a testament to India’s dedication to eco-friendly alternatives.
As the 5th largest economy globally, India is optimally utilizing its potential as a key player in the global energy market while maintaining stability in crude oil prices.
IndianOil’s success in launching Reference Fuels is a testament to India’s technological prowess and unwavering commitment to self-reliance in the energy sector. This achievement not only aligns with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat but also propels India towards becoming an ‘energy-independent’ nation by 2047. With its innovative approaches and dedication to clean energy, India is emerging as a significant global player in the energy market.
