Pakistan court bars arresting exiled ex-PM Nawaz Sharif ahead of his return

A Pakistan high court on October 19 barred authorities from arresting former three time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is scheduled to arrive back home on Saturday (October 21) after four years in self exile, his lawyer said.

Azam Nazeer Tarar told reporters that Sharif got a protective bail, which ordered authorities not to arrest him until he himself appears before the court on Oct 24.

Sharif, 73, was convicted on corruption charges in 2018.

Sharif did not complete any of his three terms as prime minister between 1990-93, 1997-99, and 2013-17. He was removed as premier by a military-backed president in 1993, ousted in a military coup in 1999, and disqualified by a court in 2017.
