Pakistan court indicts ex-PM Imran Khan in state secrets acts case

October 23, 2023 12:13 PM IST

Pakistan | Imran Khan | Pakistan election

A Pakistani court indicted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his deputy in an official secrets acts case, broadcaster Geo TV reported on October 23, in another blow for the ex-premier currently being held in a prison near Islamabad.

Khan was jailed in August after being convicted on corruption charges related to unlawfully selling state gifts during his tenure from 2018 to 2022. A court suspended his prison term weeks later but he has been remanded in custody due to the state secrets case which prevented his release.

The former PM had said the charges are designed to stop him running in an election early next year, an allegation the authorities denied.

Khan has been barred from politics for five years since August by Pakistan’s election commission after his conviction on graft charges, according to local media. Despite being in jail, he remains popular following his ouster from the premiership in 2022.
