Indian captain Rohit Sharma, affectionately nicknamed as ‘Hitman’ by his fans, yesterday notched up 1,000 runs in World Cup matches and eclipsed Chris Gayle’s enduring record of 553 sixes across various cricket formats. He etched his name in the record books with his 554th six, and achieved a massive milestone in India’s second World Cup game against Afghanistan.

West Indies legend, Chris Gayle, renowned for his six hitting abilities, had previously held the record with an astonishing 553 sixes.

The record-setting six that propelled Rohit to this historic achievement was a towering shot over deep square leg off Naveen-ul-Haq’s bowling. This powerful hit covered an impressive distance of 85 meters, underscoring Rohit’s ability to clear boundaries with ease.

As Rohit claimed the top spot for the most international sixes, he left an indelible mark on cricket history, reaffirming his status as one of the sport’s premier hitters. His extraordinary talent for sending the ball into the stands has made him a beloved figure for cricket enthusiasts and a formidable presence in the world of cricket.

Following Rohit and Gayle on the list of international cricket’s leading six-hitters are Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi with 476 sixes, followed by New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum with 398, and his compatriot Martin Guptill with 383. This remarkable milestone adds yet another accolade to Rohit’s illustrious career, cementing his status as one of the great cricketing icons of the modern era.
