The Proteas wreaked havoc at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, bowling out Australia for a mere 177 runs, handing Australia their biggest defeat in World Cup history.
After winning the toss, Australia asked South Africa to bat first. Wicket-keeper-batter Quinton de Kock scored his consecutive century in the tournament with 109 runs off 106 balls, including 8 fours and 5 sixes. Aiden Markram also accompanied well, contributing 56 runs off 44 balls, featuring 7 fours and a six. South Africa posted a total of 311 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
Australia began their chase by losing both of their openers, Mitchell Marsh and David Warner, on consecutive deliveries. They also lost Steven Smith in a controversial fashion, reducing Australia to 50-3 in the first powerplay of 10 overs.
Marnus Labuschagne scored 46 runs off 74 balls with 3 fours, while Mitchell Starc valiantly tried to delay the inevitable sinking of the ship as Australia reached 177 runs.
Kagiso Rabada bowled really well to bag three wickets, while Marco Jansen, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Keshav Maharaj claimed two wickets each, and Lungi Ngidi picked up one wicket.
With this momentous 134-run win, South Africa climb to the top of the table, while Australia finds themselves in 9th position, with their net run rate only marginally better than Afghanistan.
