Ancient rainforests’ survival secrets unearthed: A glimpse into earth’s tropical past

 A groundbreaking study, scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) have unveiled the long-standing mystery behind the survival of equatorial rainforests approximately 50 million years ago, a time when the Earth experienced global warmth and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels soared above 1000 ppmv.

Despite the planet being 13°C warmer than today, the equatorial rainforests not only endured but thrived, thanks to a crucial factor: significantly high rainfall. The team at BSIP employed innovative techniques, utilizing plant proxies to quantify terrestrial equatorial climate data from this era. Their findings, published in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, shed light on the mechanisms that allowed these ancient rainforests to withstand adverse conditions.

During this period of Earth’s history, mid- and high-latitude forests faced challenges due to substantial shifts in the hydrological cycle caused by elevated temperatures and heightened carbon dioxide concentrations. However, the equatorial rainforests, known as biodiversity hotspots, exhibited a remarkable resilience that has only now been unveiled.

The research indicates that the elevated rainfall likely played a crucial role in enhancing plant water use efficiency, enabling the equatorial flora to remain functional even in the face of extreme warmth and high carbon dioxide levels. This revelation not only enriches our understanding of Earth’s climatic history but also provides valuable insights into the dynamics of present and future climatic and biotic changes.

One notable aspect of the study is its contribution to developing a calibration file for low-latitude regions, offering a valuable tool for quantifying seasonal deep-time terrestrial climate. This calibration file is expected to play a pivotal role in unraveling the mysteries surrounding the survival of rainforests, serving as a key to comprehending current and future climatic shifts.
