The Centre will soon unveil a new set of regulations to tackle deepfakes, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday after a meeting with key stakeholders. Participants included representatives from social media platforms, government officials, and cybersecurity experts.
During the high-level talks, Vaishnaw underscored the gravity of the deepfake threat, emphasizing the urgent need for immediate action. The discussions revolved around four key pillars: Detection, Prevention, Strengthening the Mechanism, and Awareness. A consensus among all stakeholders was reached, acknowledging the harm deepfake poses to society and the necessity for more robust regulation.
Deepfake technology, a method utilizing powerful computers and deep learning to manipulate videos, images, and audio, was highlighted as a tool for generating fake news and committing financial fraud.
“The seriousness of this threat cannot be understated. Deepfake has emerged as a significant social menace, and we need to take swift and comprehensive steps. Today’s meeting with social media platforms involved detailed and candid discussions,” Vaishnaw said.
