PM inaugurates World Food India 2023, disburses seed capital assistance to over one lakh SHG members

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the highly-anticipated second edition of ‘World Food India 2023’ at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, on November 3. This spectacular culinary event is not just a feast for the taste buds but also a global celebration of food and culinary expertise. It drew a diverse array of international participants, industry experts, and food enthusiasts from around the world.

Empowering SHGs

One of the most significant aspects of the event is Prime Minister Modi’s role in strengthening Self Help Groups (SHGs). He has provided seed capital assistance to over one lakh SHG members, aimed at enhancing their market competitiveness by improving packaging and manufacturing quality.

The Food Street: A Culinary Journey

The heart of the event, the ‘Food Street,’ takes visitors on a delightful journey through a diverse range of culinary delights. Featuring regional cuisines and royal culinary heritage, this vibrant culinary boulevard is a testament to India’s rich gastronomic diversity. Over 200 chefs, both Indian and international, are participating, presenting traditional Indian cuisine, creating a unique culinary experience.

The Fusion of Technology and Taste

In his speech, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the fusion of technology and taste at the event, underlining its role in shaping the future economy. He stressed the importance of food security in today’s changing world and the significance of ‘World Food India 2023.’

India’s Food Processing Sector as a ‘Sunrise Sector’

PM Modi pointed out that the event showcased India’s food processing sector as a ‘sunrise sector.’ Over the last nine years, it has attracted more than Rs 50,000 crores in foreign direct investment due to government policies, including the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Thousands of projects are underway, supported by the Agri-Infra Fund and investments in processing infrastructure for fisheries and animal husbandry.

Growth in Agricultural Exports

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s investor-friendly policies, which have driven remarkable growth. Processed foods’ share in India’s agricultural exports increased from 13% to 23%, marking a 150% overall growth. India now ranks 7th in agricultural exports with an export value exceeding $50 billion. This growth presents a golden opportunity for companies and startups in the food processing industry.

India as the ‘Food Basket of the World’

The overarching goal of the event is to spotlight India as the ‘food basket of the world.’ It also celebrates 2023 as the International Year of Millets. ‘World Food India 2023’ serves as a platform for government bodies, industry professionals, farmers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders to engage in discussions, establish partnerships, and explore investment opportunities in the agri-food sector. CEO roundtables will focus on investment and Ease of Doing Business.

Showcasing Innovation and Strength

To showcase the innovation and strength of the Indian food processing industry, numerous pavilions have been set up, providing a platform to exhibit the latest advancements and achievements in the field. The event features 48 sessions covering various aspects of the food processing industry, with a strong emphasis on financial empowerment, quality assurance, and innovations in machinery and technology.

With participants from over 80 countries, including CEOs of prominent food processing companies, ‘World Food India 2023’ is a truly global event. It hosts a Reverse Buyer Seller Meet, with over 1200 overseas buyers from more than 80 countries, providing a unique opportunity for businesses to connect and explore new partnerships.

International Partnerships

The Netherlands holds the prestigious position of the partner country for this event, underscoring international collaboration. Japan takes the spotlight as the focus country, bringing its own unique perspective to the culinary celebration.
