India will host the virtual G20 Leaders’ Summit on Wednesday, bringing together world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The virtual meeting will see participation from leaders of all G20 members, including the Chair of the African Union, nine guest countries, and heads of 11 international organizations.
During the closing ceremony of the G20 Summit on September 10, Prime Minister Modi had announced India’s commitment to hosting a virtual G20 Leaders’ Summit before the conclusion of India’s G20 Presidency on November 22. The summit aims to address crucial issues, deliberate on select outcomes, and review developments since the conclusion of the New Delhi G20 Summit in September.
India presently holds the G20 Presidency until November 30. The G20 troika, during the Brazilian G20 presidency in 2024, will comprise India, Brazil, and South Africa. India took on the rotating G20 presidency on December 1 of the previous year and will remain a part of the troika for an additional year. The new troika will be established when Brazil assumes the presidency next month, with India in the role of the past presidency and South Africa taking over the presidency after Brazil.
Alem Tsesaye Woldemariam, the Ambassador of Eritrea to India and the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in India, said, “India’s G20 Presidency has been pivotal in advancing the interests of the Global South and forging a more inclusive world order.”
In a separate statement, African envoy M Aloys Bizindavyi, Ambassador of Burundi to India, expressed gratitude to India for supporting the African Union’s bid to become a permanent member of the G20.
