Italy won the Davis Cup for the second time as an outstanding display by Jannik Sinner secured a straightforward 2-0 victory over Australia on Sunday (November 26).
After Matteo Arnaldi outlasted Alexei Popyrin in the first singles clash, Italy’s number one Sinner thrashed Alex De Minaur 6-3 6-0 to start the celebrations.
Italy’s only other title in the elite men’s team competition was in 1976 while 28-time champions Australia have not managed to win it since 2003, also losing in last year’s final.
Sinner had saved three match points against world number one Novak Djokovic in Saturday’s (November 25) semi-final with Serbia before beating the 24-time Grand Slam champion to keep Italy alive.
Sinner beat Djokovic again and his partner Miomir Kecmanovic in the doubles with Lorenzo Sonego to send Italy through to meet Australia on Sunday, where Italy displayed phenomenal performance.
