Centre reinforces commitment to elderly care in response to ‘India Ageing Report 2023’

The recent release of the “India Ageing Report 2023” by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS) has prompted the Government of India to reiterate its dedication to addressing the challenges and opportunities associated with elderly care. The report sheds light on the welfare of senior citizens in India, leading the government to underscore its existing measures to support the elderly.

During a Lok Sabha session, Pratima Bhoumik, the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, outlined the government’s proactive stance. The response emphasized constitutional provisions, legal frameworks, and operational policies designed to ensure the well-being of senior citizens nationwide.

Key constitutional provisions, notably Article 41 of the Constitution of India, emphasize the state’s responsibility to provide public assistance and support, particularly for the elderly. The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, serves as a significant legal measure dedicated to addressing the specific needs of the elderly population.

Additionally, the government has implemented various schemes and programs to support elderly citizens, including the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana, Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme, Atal Pension Yojana, and the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme. These initiatives aim to offer financial assistance and security to the elderly.

To ensure effective implementation and capacity-building initiatives, the government collaborates with NGOs, training centers, and the National Institute of Social Defence. Acknowledging their role, private companies are mandated by the Companies Act of 2013 to support the elderly through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

As the government responds to the insights from the India Ageing Report 2023, it remains resolute in evolving strategies and policies to meet the dynamic needs of senior citizens in the country. The report catalyzes ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of life for the elderly and promote their well-being within the broader context of societal development.
