The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially designated Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) as an ‘unlawful association’ under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for the next five years. The MHA issued a notification exercising its powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967).

Following the announcement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared on ‘X’, “The ‘Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, J&K (TeH) has been declared an ‘Unlawful Association’ under UAPA. The outfit is involved in forbidden activities to separate J&K from India and establish Islamic rule. The group is found spreading anti-India propaganda and continuing terror activities to fuel secessionism in J&K.”

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, any individual or organization found involved in anti-India activities will be thwarted forthwith, as per Amit Shah’s post.

The MHA’s notification outlined that Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Jammu and Kashmir (TeH), is known for fomenting terrorism and anti-India propaganda to fuel secessionist activities in the region. The objective of TeH is declared as separating Jammu and Kashmir from India and establishing Islamic rule in the Union Territory.

TeH leaders and members have been accused of raising funds through various sources, including Pakistan and its proxy organizations, to support unlawful activities, including terrorist activities and sustained stone-pelting on security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Ministry highlighted that TeH members show disrespect towards the constitutional authority and set-up of the country, paying tributes to terrorists killed in encounters with security forces. They are involved in supporting terrorist activities with the intent to create a reign of terror in the country, endangering security and public order.

The MHA emphasized that TeH never believed in a democratic system of governance and repeatedly called for boycotting assembly elections. The Central government, considering TeH’s activities detrimental to the territorial integrity, security, and sovereignty of the country, has deemed it necessary to declare Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Jammu and Kashmir (TeH), as an ‘unlawful association’ with immediate effect.
