Annually observed on December 14, National Energy Conservation Day in India is dedicated to promoting the significance of energy conservation while highlighting the nation’s achievements in energy efficiency and conservation.
To commemorate the day this year, the government will present the National Energy Conservation Awards, National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards, and the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation.
Taking stock of India’s efforts to conserve and regulate energy consumption, here are notable initiatives:
1. Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2022:
In effect from January 1, 2023, this bill introduces provisions for a “Carbon Credit Trading Scheme” aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Entities complying with the scheme may receive carbon credit certificates, enabling them to participate in the trading of these certificates.
2. Global and National Commitment:
Despite per capita carbon emissions and greenhouse gas emissions significantly below the global average, India remains committed to environmental protection. Initiatives like ‘Lifestyle For Environment’ reflect the nation’s responsibility in addressing climate change.
3. Emphasis on E-Mobility:
The government prioritizes e-mobility with a focus on electric vehicles, battery swapping policies, and the establishment of charging stations. The recently launched ‘EV-Yatra Portal’ facilitates in-vehicle navigation to the nearest public EV charger.
4. National Green Hydrogen Mission:
With an allocation of Rs 19,700 crores, this mission exemplifies India’s commitment to a low-carbon economy. The objective is to diminish reliance on fossil fuels, targeting an annual production of 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen by 2030.
5. Electricity (Promoting Renewable Energy through Green Energy Open Access) Rules, 2022:
Issued by the Ministry of Power, these rules lower the open access limit from 1 MW to 100 kW, enabling small consumers to purchase renewable energy.
6. Comprehensive Initiatives:
Government initiatives such as Ujjala, PM-Kusum, solar parks, green energy corridors, and others collectively contribute to advancing India’s transition to an energy-efficient nation.
