Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and property caused by Cyclone Michaung, particularly in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry. In a tweet, PM Modi conveyed his condolences to the families who lost loved ones due to the cyclone and extended prayers for those injured or affected by the calamity.
In his social media post, PM Modi stated, “My sympathies are with the families who have lost their dear ones, especially in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry due to Cyclone Michaung. My prayers are with those injured or affected by this cyclone. Officials are tirelessly working at the ground level to aid the affected individuals, and they will continue their efforts until the situation is completely normalized.”
The aftermath of the cyclone has led to swollen rivers and waterlogging in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati district. Immediate action has been taken to clear fallen trees and restore electricity supply. Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy conducted a review of relief and rescue operations in the affected areas on December 5. He directed the rapid restoration of electricity supply and announced compensation within 48 hours for those who suffered loss of life or property.
The State Information Department reported an allocation of 22 crores for immediate action. Additionally, 52 relief centers have been established in the Anakapalli district, accommodating over 60,000 people. One lakh tons of rice have been procured for emergency needs, and four lakh tons have been safeguarded from soaking. The state government has announced financial aid ranging from 1000 to 2500 rupees for the evacuees, and compensation for house damage has been increased from 8000 to 10,000 rupees.
The Indian Meteorological Department said on Wednesday that Cyclone Michaung has weakened, providing a sigh of relief and easing concerns regarding potential additional threats to life and property. While the cyclone has diminished in intensity, there remains a possibility of continued rainfall in the southern coastal states of India over the next few days.
