Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to visit flood affected district of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. The Union Minister will hold a review meeting with the District Administration of Thoothukudi at 12:30 pm. Later in the day, the Finance Minister will pay a visit to the flood affected areas at 2:00 pm.
The district faced a disruption in normal life when heavy rains on December 17 and 18 caused flooding. The flooding also caused litter to collect in homes and roads. The civic authorities have been engaged in removing waste and debris on road and residential areas.
The Ministry of Home Affairs was continuously monitoring the situation with control rooms looking at the situation 24×7. Armed Forces were also deployed for the rescue operation of the people. Two columns of Indian Army was mobilised from Thiruvananthapuram and Wellington, rescue teams of Indian Navy along with one advance Light helicopter and Gemini boats were deployed for rescue and relief operation.
Further, a total of 6 additional teams of NDRF were mobilised for Southern Tamil Nadu in consultation with the State authorities.
The Central Government also constituted an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) for assessment of the damages caused by heavy rainfall and floods in the four districts of Southern Tamil Nadu.
