Delhi winter power demand

As temperatures drop in Delhi, the city experienced an unprecedented surge in power demand, reaching a record-breaking 5701 MW at 10:49 am on Friday. This surpassed the previous winter high of 5611 MW recorded on January 10 and 5559 MW on January 5.

Since the beginning of the new year, the peak power demand in the capital has surged by over 11 percent. BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) have effectively met the peak power demand, with BRPL handling 2484 MW and BYPL managing 1185 MW.

Contrary to typical winter energy consumption trends, Delhi’s peak power demand has consistently remained above 5000 MW so far this month, except for January 2.

In anticipation of the escalating demand, the city’s power infrastructure has made significant strides in incorporating green energy solutions. Up to 60 percent of the maximum ‘winter’ power demand, exceeding 3600+ MW in the BSES area, will be met by green power sources.

In addition to long-term agreements with power plants, over 2000 MW of green power has played a vital role in ensuring a reliable power supply to BSES consumers during the winter months. This includes 840 MW of solar power from SECI, 540 MW of hydropower, 500 MW of wind power, approximately 40 MW from waste-to-energy, and around 160 MW of rooftop solar power installed in the South, West, East, and Central parts of the national capital.

Highlighting a forward-thinking approach, BSES demonstrated its commitment to innovation by using a combination of advanced statistical forecasting models with complex algorithms. This, along with cutting-edge weather forecasting solutions incorporating artificial intelligence and machine learning, ensured a resilient power supply during the demanding winter months.
