Varun Tomar seals India’s 14th Olympic quota place in shooting with a gold medal in men’s 10m Air Pistol event at Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Jakarta, Indonesia. The event, serving as the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifying event, the Asian Olympic Qualifier Rifle and Pistol 2024 shooting event, began today and will conclude on January 18.

India is being represented by 49 shooters at the meet. Barring the Olympic rifle and pistol shooting disciplines, India will also be fielding athletes in non-Olympic events like 50m rifle prone for men and women, men’s 25m standard and centre fire pistol for the continental championships. Furthermore, eight shooters will be contending in the junior competitions.

The key focus will, however, be on the eight individual Olympic disciplines. This includes men’s and women’s 10m air pistol, men’s and women’s 10m air rifle, men’s and women’s 50m rifle 3 positions, men’s 25m rapid fire pistol and women’s 25m pistol where Paris 2024 quotas will be on offer.
Indian shooters have so far won 13 quotas – eight in rifle, three in pistol and two in shotgun. Sarabjot Singh, Manu Bhaker and Anish Bhanwala are the three Indian pistol shooters who have already secured a quota. India’s pistol contingent at Jakarta will be headlined by Esha Singh, Rhythm Sangwan, Rahi Sarnobat, Gurpreet Singh, Arjun Singh Cheema and Vijayveer Sidhu.
