In a positive development for residents of the National Capital Region (NCR), the Commission for Air Quality Management has announced the revocation of Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) with immediate effect. This decision comes in light of the significant improvement observed in the region’s air quality in recent days.

The Commission emphasized the need for continued vigilance and adherence to statutory directions, advisories, and orders to sustain the current improvement in air quality levels. All agencies concerned with air quality management in the NCR have been directed to strictly follow rules, regulations, and guidelines issued by relevant authorities.

The decision to revoke Stage-I of GRAP was taken following a comprehensive review by the Sub-Committee for invoking actions under GRAP. The committee noted a consistent improvement in the average Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi since February 22, 2024, with AQI levels consistently falling below 200, categorizing the air quality as ‘Moderate.’

Weather forecasts provided by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) also indicated a continuation of moderate AQI levels in the coming days. Consequently, the committee unanimously decided to revoke Stage-I of GRAP throughout the NCR.

It’s worth noting that different stages of GRAP have been invoked and withdrawn based on the prevailing air quality scenario and weather forecasts. Previous stages of GRAP, including Stage-IV, Stage-III, and Stage-II, were withdrawn on specific dates in November 2023, January 2024, and February 2024 respectively.

While the revocation of Stage-I of GRAP is a positive development, authorities remain committed to ensuring sustained efforts to prevent a deterioration in air quality. Agencies have been instructed to adhere to comprehensive policies and guidelines issued by the Commission to address air pollution effectively.

The Commission’s decision reflects a balanced approach towards air quality management, considering both the improvements observed and the need for continued vigilance to prevent any reversal in progress. As stakeholders work together to implement measures aimed at curbing air pollution, the focus remains on safeguarding public health and promoting a cleaner environment for all residents of the NCR.
