DD Exclusive: EAM Jaishankar talks about India’s historical roots & maritime potential

In an exclusive interview with DD India, External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, underscored the profound historical roots and maritime potential of India, framing them as crucial elements in the nation’s contemporary identity and global presence.

Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the enduring significance of ancient trade routes that connected India with distant regions such as Europe. He emphasized that initiatives like the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) hold not only innovative potential but also carry forward a legacy spanning thousands of years. By reclaiming and acknowledging this historical continuum, India seeks to assert its rightful place on the global stage.

One key aspect discussed was India’s maritime heritage. Dr. Jaishankar pointed out that despite being the namesake of an ocean, post-independence India had yet to fully integrate and leverage its maritime domain. However, recent efforts, including the SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region) initiative led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, signify a renewed focus on India’s coastal and island territories. These efforts not only address unique maritime challenges but also aim to showcase India’s cultural and civilizational footprint across diverse regions.

The interview delved into the concept of “Civilizational India,” stressing that India’s rich cultural heritage underpins its global stature. With a burgeoning population and a rapidly growing economy poised to become the third-largest in the world, India’s presence in various spheres is becoming increasingly pronounced. Dr. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of embracing and projecting this civilizational narrative as a source of pride and confidence on the international stage.

Furthermore, he emphasized the necessity for self-awareness and acknowledgment of India’s history and traditions. Dr. Jaishankar asserted that denying or downplaying India’s past would undermine its ability to assert itself as a significant civilizational power. He argued that India’s future trajectory is intrinsically linked to its understanding and appreciation of its heritage.

Dr. Jaishankar’s interview sheds light on India’s multifaceted approach to global engagement, rooted in a deep historical consciousness and a newfound focus on maritime potential.
