The President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), PT Usha, on Sunday confirmed India’s formal dialogue with the Future Host Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for hosting the 2036 Olympics.
In an official statement from the IOA, PT Usha stated, “The IOA is actively in dialogue with the Future Host Commission of the IOC regarding hosting the 2030 Youth Olympics and the 2036 Olympic Games in India, in accordance with the vision of the Honourable Prime Minister.”
This confirmation follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of India’s interest in hosting the 2036 Games during the IOC Session in Mumbai on October 14 last year.
Notably, this marks the first official confirmation from the IOA regarding its formal initiation of dialogue with the IOC’s Future Host Commission. If successful, it would be a historic achievement for the PT Usha-led IOA.
Since the inception of the Olympic Games in 1896, only four Asian cities—Tokyo (1964 and 2020), Seoul (1988), and Beijing (2008)—have hosted the Summer Olympic Games.
Given recent controversies surrounding the hosting process, the IOC established the Future Host Commission to streamline the selection of host cities.
In 2021, Brisbane, Australia, was announced as the host city for the 2032 Olympics by the Future Host Commission, and ongoing discussions are reportedly taking place with potential cities interested in hosting the 2036 Games.
Paris is set to host the upcoming 2024 Olympics, while Los Angeles has been selected for the 2028 edition of the prestigious multi-sport event.
