Lekhi releases Rs 200, Rs 10 coins to commemorate Sri Satguru Ram Singh’s bicentennial birth anniversary

Minister of State for Culture, Meenakashi Lekhi, unveiled a commemorative coin of Rs 200 and a currency coin of Rs 10 on Sunday to mark the bicentennial birth anniversary of Sri Satguru Ram Singh. Revered as a great philanthropist, thinker, seer, and social reformer, Satguru’s legacy continues to inspire generations.

Reflecting on the profound impact of Sri Satguru Ram Singh, Lekhi highlighted his pioneering use of non-cooperation and swadeshi as instruments for India’s liberation from British colonial rule. He advocated for self-reliance and promoted indigenous products, urging citizens to embrace their Indian identity.

“During his glorious lifetime, he united the people for the independence of the country and against the evils of the society. His thoughts will continue to inspire the nation for a long time,” Lekhi said.

Satguru Ram Singh spearheaded campaigns against gender discrimination, condemning the practice of female infanticide and opposing the tradition of Sati.

He championed equal educational opportunities for girls and established a minimum marriageable age of 18 for girls and 20 for boys in 1857. In 1872, he faced exile to Myanmar. Notably, he was the first to commission the printing of the Holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib via lithography in India.
