PM Modi bids farewell to retiring Rajya Sabha members, commends Manmohan Singh’s legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday bid farewell to the retiring members of Rajya Sabha, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of former prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Reflecting on Dr. Singh’s extensive tenure guiding both the house and the nation, PM Modi said, “Due to his long tenure guiding the house and the nation, he will figure in every discussion of the democracy of our nation.”

PM Modi urged all members of Parliament to draw inspiration from such distinguished figures, considering them as guiding lights for their conduct. He recalled the inspiring example of Dr. Singh, who, despite physical challenges, made a point to participate in House proceedings, symbolizing dedication to duty. “I believe he came to impart strength to democracy,” remarked PM Modi.

Highlighting the cyclical nature of the Rajya Sabha, where new members inject fresh perspectives every two years, PM Modi evoked the indelible memories and invaluable legacy left behind by departing members.

He stressed that those transitioning to more public platforms would greatly benefit from their experiences in the Rajya Sabha. “This is a diverse university of six years, shaped by experiences. Anyone who goes out from here goes enriched and strengthens the work of nation-building,” he said.

PM Modi underscored the significance of the moment, noting that departing members had the privilege of witnessing both the old and new buildings of the Rajya Sabha, symbolizing the passage of time and the evolution of Indian democracy.

In recognition of the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, PM Modi praised the commitment of members for ensuring the uninterrupted functioning of the House despite uncertainties. He expressed heartfelt condolences for those members who succumbed to the virus, acknowledging the House’s resilience in the face of adversity.

Recalling a past incident of opposition members wearing black clothes, PM Modi interpreted it as an attempt to ward off negativity and evil forces amid the nation’s journey towards progress and prosperity.
