Regional Community Radio Sammelan to mark 20 years of community radio in India

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is set to host the regional Community Radio Sammelan (South) on the 13th and 14th of February at Anna University, Chennai, commemorating 20 years of Community Radio in India. This event will see participation from all 117 Community Radio Stations across the southern States and Union Territories.

The occasion will witness Anurag Thakur, Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports, delivering the Keynote Address, while Dr. L. Murugan, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, will address the gathering with a special speech.

The event is also expected to witness the announcement of policy changes by the I&B Minister to provide a boost to the Community Radio Sector.

The journey of Community Radio in India began in 2002 when the Government approved a policy for granting licenses to well-established educational institutions, including IITs/IIMs. Over time, the policy broadened its scope to include non-profit organizations, facilitating greater participation from civil society on developmental and social issues.

Since the inauguration of the first Community Radio Station in 2004 by L.K Advani, the sector has seen steady growth. In recent years, the Government has taken proactive steps to streamline processes, resulting in a significant increase in the number of Community Radio Stations, reaching 481 by 2023.

Community Radio plays a crucial role as the third tier in Radio Broadcasting, distinct from Public Service Radio broadcasting and Commercial Radio. These low-power stations are operated by local communities and serve as platforms for airing local voices on various issues such as health, nutrition, education, and agriculture.

Moreover, Community Radio serves as a powerful medium for marginalized sections of society to voice their concerns, providing content in local languages and dialects for better engagement. It also contributes to strengthening people’s participation in development programs through its holistic approach.

The Regional Sammelan coincides with World Radio Day on 13th February, further highlighting the significance of Community Radio in fostering dialogue, understanding, and community cohesion.
