Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, revealed plans for a semiconductor packaging plant in Assam during the Digital India Future Skills Summit in Guwahati on Thursday. The plant, backed by an investment of Rs 25,000 crore, aims to create job opportunities in the semiconductor industry and reshape the region’s technological landscape.
Chandrasekhar credited Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma for the decision to establish the plant in Assam, highlighting the collaboration between the state government and the TATA Group. The Assam government has allocated 150 acres of land near Guwahati for the project.
The summit, attended by industry leaders, policymakers, and technology enthusiasts, focused on strategies to nurture future-ready talent in India. Chandrasekhar lauded India’s economic progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and urged students to acquire skills in emerging sectors such as AI, cybersecurity, and semiconductors.
Industry giants like NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, HCL, Wipro, and IBM emphasized the importance of skills acquisition amidst abundant job opportunities. Chandrasekhar outlined the government’s strategy of future design, labs for system innovation, and skills development to prepare young Indians for emerging sectors nationwide.
Assam Education Minister, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, highlighted the state’s commitment to digital skilling initiatives, with projects worth Rs. 1800 crore implemented across 77 polytechnics and ITIs.
Key speakers from AMD India, Siemens EDA, Kyndryl India, and Gnani.AI highlighted India’s progress in emerging technologies and its potential as a hub for AI companies. The summit also featured exhibitions showcasing over 30 innovative future skills technologies, leading to strategic collaborations between NIELIT and industry players like Intel, HCL, Microsoft, Kyndryl, IIM Raipur, IIITM Gwalior, and Wipro.
Panel discussions covered themes including Semicon India, IndiaAI, Cyber Security & Emerging Technologies, and Digital India’s Talent for the Global Workforce.
