Rajnath Singh to inaugurate DefConnect 2024 to encourage indigenous defence innovation

In an effort to give a boost to indigenous innovation in defence production, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will inaugurate ‘DefConnect 2024′ in New Delhi today.

Organized by Innovations for Defence Excellence-Defence Innovation Organisation (iDEX-DIO), the event aims to forge partnerships and tackle emerging security challenges. It serves as a pivotal moment in India’s defence innovation landscape, uniting key stakeholders such as the Armed Forces, defence industry leaders, start-ups, academia, and policymakers.

iDEX framework: collaborative innovation for progress

At the heart of this innovation ecosystem is the iDEX framework, a brainchild launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018. This framework provides a unified platform for various stakeholders in the defence and aerospace sectors, acting as an umbrella organization overseeing technology development and potential collaborations.

One of iDEX’s unique features is the co-development model, enabling military personnel to collaborate directly with innovators. Serving as end-users, nodals, and domain experts, the military’s involvement helps guide innovation and seamlessly integrate advancements into existing platforms. This collaborative approach leverages the expertise and insights of the end user, ensuring practical and effective solutions.

iDEX successes: A testament to innovation

iDEX has conducted 10 rounds of the Defence India Start-up Challenge (DISC) and 11 rounds of Open Challenges (OC), collectively receiving over 9,000 applications from individual innovators and start-ups. Challenges have been posed by the Tri-Services, Defence Space Agency, Defence Public Sector Undertakings, Indian Coast Guard, Border Roads Organisation, and other agencies. The success of these challenges is evidenced by the advancements showcased by iDEX winners at the upcoming DefConnect event.

Empowering women in defence innovation

Ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, DefConnect 2024 will feature an All-Women Panel Discussion on ‘Women as Drivers of Change.’ This initiative underscores the importance of women’s contributions to the defence innovation landscape, highlighting their role as catalysts for positive change.

Cutting-edge technologies

A central focus of DefConnect 2024 is the showcase of cutting-edge technologies developed by iDEX winners. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity for visitors to meet iDEX start-ups and gain insights into their innovative technologies. The array of advancements on display is expected to capture the attention of industry leaders, policymakers, and enthusiasts alike.
