In a bid to reduce food waste and adopt a sustainable approach during this year’s month of Ramadan, the UAE launched a campaign to donate leftover food to those in need.

Launched in 2017, the UAE Food Bank – a non-profit organisation vows to reduce food waste by 30% by 2027 and to double local and global partnerships to manage food surplus in order to reduce carbon emissions.

“Over the past years, we have noticed that unfortunately, food waste increases during the holy month of Ramadan,” said head of the executive team of the UAE Food Bank, Manal Bin Yaroof Al Suwaidi.

The Food Bank encourages residents, supermarkets, restaurants and hotels to send over their surplus food and products, which they then distribute to those in need through trusted local or international charities.

“Our average daily number of distributed meals is 166,000 meals per day. Hopefully, by the end of Ramadan, we will achieve the goal of 5 million [distributed] meals,” said Yaroof talking about one their initiatives.
