Rajasthan is likely to experience a severe heatwave beginning Thursday, following expected thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) on Monday and Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department has forecasted.

Radhe Shyam Sharma, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Jaipur, said that the state might find relief from the severe heatwave for a day or two owing to western disturbances. However, he cautioned that after May 15 or 16, the heatwave is expected to return.

“Currently, in most of the parts of Rajasthan, the average temperature is ranging between 40-42 degrees Celsius, which is slightly normal, but the minimum temperature recorded in some parts is around 31 degrees Celsius, which is 2-3 degrees higher than normal,” he said.

A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect western Himalayan region from May 17, causing duststorm/ thunderstorm with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places over Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on Monday. Further, strong surface winds (30-40 kmph) are very likely to prevail over plains of south Rajasthan on Monday.

On Sunday, several parts of West Rajasthan recorded maximum temperatures in the range of 40-42 degrees Celsius, the IMD said.

“Yesterday, the maximum temperature recorded was 42.96 degrees Celsius at Jalore, while the temperature in Barmer was 42.5 degrees Celsius. The temperature recorded in other districts ranged between 40 degrees Celsius and lower. This is because of a western disturbance,” Sharma said.

“From May 15 or 16, temperatures are expected to rise in the state, reaching 45 degrees Celsius or higher,” he added.
