The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approached former cricketer Gautam Gambhir to replace Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach, according to a rereport.
The report indicates that Gambhir is BCCI’s top candidate to become India’s next head coach, as Dravid’s tenure is set to end following the T20 World Cup 2024.
BCCI plans to discuss the position with Gambhir after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, where he is currently serving as the mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Gambhir was a crucial member of India’s victorious campaigns in the ICC World T20 in 2007 and the 2011 ODI World Cup.
After India lost the ICC Cricket World Cup final at home last November, Dravid was given an extension until June 2024, aligning with the ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA, scheduled from June 1 to 29.
BCCI on Monday invited applications for the position of men’s national team head coach, with the tenure starting on July 1, 2024, and concluding on December 31, 2027, the year of the next 50-over Cricket World Cup.
The application deadline is May 27, 6 PM.
The selection process will include a thorough review of applications, followed by personal interviews and assessments of shortlisted candidates.
Under Gambhir’s mentorship, KKR has been in stupendous performance form in IPL 2024. They have won 9 out of 13 matches, leading the standings with 19 points and a net run rate of +1.428. The Kolkata-based franchise only lost three matches this season, to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Punjab Kings (PBKS).
