In response to the severe floods plaguing Kenya, the Government of India has extended its humanitarian assistance for the second time this month. India’s support to Kenya included a significant aid package comprising 22 tonnes of essential medicines, medical equipment, and other supplies.
The aid was transported on Tuesday via an Indian Air Force aircraft from Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad to Kenya.
This initiative comes as part of India’s proactive role as the first responder in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Earlier, on May 10, India had delivered food supplies and medical aid to the African nation.
The situation in Kenya remains dire, with torrential rains causing widespread flooding and resulting in over 250 casualties, displacement of thousands, and destruction of nearly 2,000 schools. The severity of the crisis prompted authorities to close down all remaining schools until further notice, according to reports.
The ongoing rains, which began in March, have been among the most catastrophic weather events experienced in Kenya in recent years. A total of 38 out of 47 counties have been affected.
Adding to the woes, Cyclone Hidaya is forecasted to impact Kenya and neighbouring Tanzania, potentially worsening the flooding situation.
