The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday conducted a successful flight test of the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence, the SMART system represents the next generation of missile-based light-weight torpedo delivery systems, designed to bolster the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities beyond the conventional ranges of lightweight torpedoes.
The canister-based missile system comprises several advanced sub-systems, including a two-stage solid propulsion system, an electromechanical actuator system, a precision inertial navigation system, among others. The system carries an advanced light-weight torpedo as its payload with a parachute-based release mechanism.
The missile was launched from a ground mobile launcher. Several state-of-the-art mechanisms such as symmetric separation, ejection and velocity control were validated during the test.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO and the industry partners on the successful flight-test of SMART. “The development of the system will further enhance the strength of our Navy,” he said.
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, commended the collective efforts of the entire SMART team and encouraged them to persevere on their journey of excellence.
The SMART system’s successful flight test signifies a significant advancement in India’s defence capabilities, particularly in maritime security. The enhanced range and precision of SMART system holds promise in enhancing the Navy’s ability to effectively counter the threats.
