Severe heatwave conditions to persist over northwest India: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecasted that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue over the plains of Northwest India and West Madhya Pradesh. The IMD said that heatwave conditions in the Western Himalayan Region, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh will persist for the next three days and are likely to abate thereafter.

A red alert has been issued for heatwave conditions in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh on May 28.

On Sunday (May 26), several places in India recorded maximum temperatures above 42°C, including Raipur in Chhattisgarh (43.0°C), V.V. Nagar in Gujarat (43.7°C), Una in Himachal Pradesh (44.4°C), Adilabad in Telangana (44.8°C), Sagar in Madhya Pradesh (46.2°C), Yeotmal in Interior Maharashtra (46.6°C), Faridkot in Punjab (47.4°C), and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh (47.6°C). Mungeshpur in Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 48.3°C, while Phalodi in Rajasthan recorded 49.8°C.

The IMD has predicted that conditions are likely to become favorable for the onset of the monsoon over Kerala in the next five days. Very heavy rainfall is expected in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura on May 27-28; Assam and Meghalaya from May 27-30; and Arunachal Pradesh from May 27-29.
