Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina to pay two-day State visit to India

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will pay a two-day state visit to India starting Thursday, in what will be the first incoming bilateral visit since the formation of the new Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During her stay on June 21-22, Hasina will hold bilateral consultations with PM Modi and call on President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar is also scheduled to meet the Bangladeshi leader.

The visit shows the close ties between the two neighbors, which share a multifaceted relationship marked by a shared history, culture, and geographical proximity. Ties between India and Bangladesh have expanded under the leadership of PM Modi and PM Hasina over the years.

The year 2023 witnessed a spur of bilateral activities between both countries as an embodiment of the strength of the relationship. Both Prime Ministers jointly inaugurated the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline on 18 March in a virtual format and three Indian-assisted development projects in Bangladesh in November, including cross-border rail links and a power plant.

PM Sheikh Hasina also participated virtually in India’s Voice of the Global South Summits in January and November 2023, when Bangladesh served as a guest country during India’s G20 presidency.

As part of India’s G20 presidency in 2023, Bangladesh participated in various ministerial meetings, including the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the Development Ministers’ Meeting.
