Mexico | Coahuila | Pasta de Conchos mine

The Mexican government informed on Wednesday (June 12) human remains were found inside a mine that 18 years ago saw a gas explosion killing 65, leaving families demanding for justice.

In 2006, the miners were killed in a pre-dawn explosion of methane gas and coal dust which tore throughout the Pasta de Conchos mine in Mexico’s northern state of Coahuila, trapping some workers almost 1.5 miles (2.5 km) underground.

So far only two bodies have been recovered after the tragedy, local media reported.

Authorities found human remains and work supplies at 146 meters depth in an area where reports showed 13 miners were. No evidence of an explosion was found in the place, according to a government statement.

The findings come four years after President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador ordered to resume search works following historic demands from the families of the victims.

The Pasta de Conchos Families Organization celebrated the news in a statement but demanded the works persist until all the bodies were found.

The organization filed a lawsuit before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights against the Mexican state for neglecting to protect the miners’ lives, the statement reads.
