In a remarkable achievement, four officers from the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) of India have brought home a record 32 medals from the 43rd World Medical and Health Games, held in Saint-Tropez, France, from June 16 to 23, 2024. This prestigious event, often called the Olympic Games for Health Professionals, witnessed outstanding performances by Lt Col Sanjeev Malik, Maj Anish George, Capt Stephen Sebastian, and Capt Dania James.
The Indian officers collectively won an impressive tally of 19 gold medals, 9 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals, making history for their nation. Lt Col Sanjeev Malik clinched five gold medals in the above 35 years male category, excelling in events such as the 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, cross country, and the 4x100m relay. Maj Anish George secured four gold, six silver, and two bronze medals in the under 35 years male category, competing in a variety of events including the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, javelin, shot put, discus throw, hammer throw, and powerlifting. Capt Stephen Sebastian won six gold medals in the under 35 years male category, showcasing his prowess in the 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump, hammer throw, and the 4x100m relay. Capt Dania James earned four gold, three silver, and two bronze medals in the under 35 years female category, competing in events such as the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, javelin, discus throw, shot put, badminton solo, badminton doubles, and powerlifting.
The Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services, Lt Gen Daljit Singh, congratulated the officers for their spectacular performances and wished them continued success in the future.
The World Medical and Health Games, established in 1978, has become the most prestigious global sporting event for the medical community. Each year, it attracts over 2,500 participants from more than 50 nations.
