Union Home Minister Amit Shah has taken swift action to address the escalating flood situation in several Indian states. On Monday, Shah held separate phone conversations with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat to assess the impact of heavy rainfall and rising water levels in these regions.

In Assam, where the situation remains critical, over 5 lakh people across 18 districts are affected by the deluge. The death toll has surpassed 90, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

The flood-affected districts in Assam include Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Sivasagar.

On the other hand, 1,342 villages under 52 revenue circles are still under water and the flood waters submerged 25367.61 hectares of crop area in Assam.

Over 58,000 people are still taking shelter in 172 relief camps and distribution centres in 13 districts. 283712 domestic animals were also affected by the deluge.

Uttar Pradesh is also grappling with flood-related issues, particularly in its eastern and central regions. Approximately 18 lakh people in over 900 villages have been impacted by the rising water levels in several rivers. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has already conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas and instructed officials to provide necessary assistance.

In Gujarat, heavy rains in the Valsad district have led to the flooding of low-lying areas and parts of the national highway. The water level in Madhuban Dam has risen significantly, prompting the deployment of disaster management teams.

During his calls with the state leaders, Shah assured them of the Centre’s support in managing the crisis. He pledged to provide assistance from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to aid in relief and rescue operations.
